The GOES-R Space Environment In-Situ Suite (SEISS) will include magnetic energetic ion sensors for both low and high energy levels. One of the Space Weather alerts issued by SWPC will depend upon this product in the GOES-R era. These electrons are very penetrating, and can cause electrical breakdown and discharges of materials deep inside of equipment (Deep Dielectric Charging). They can also adversely affect High Frequency radio transmissions and therefore GPS navigation.
